A Profile

How did you first get interested in the graphic arts, or decide to focus on graphic communications in school?
Trade school in highschool.

Did you take any courses in high school that were related to graphic communications, or that prepared you for your planned career?
I took a graphics class that taught us how to use a vinyl cutter and how to process files.

How do you think going through your education process prepared you for the workforce?
Ferris State university gave me a leg up in the work force. The program gave real experience, exposure, and examples to the students. I was well prepared to use the software and technology used in the industry.

In Today's Workforce

What company are you working for now and what types of products and services do they provide to their customers?
Gilson Graphics prints and produces large displays, signage, flyers, post cards. All aspects of large format to digital.

What job did you first have with the company when you started, what position do you have now, and/or what else have you done since joining the company?
I started out as an account manager for the sales team and moved into a customer service position.

What do you think employers are looking for in today’s workforce and the current industry environment?
Employers are looking for experience, starting anywhere is enough to get exposure.

Is there anything that you have found to be particularly different from what you initially expected, now that you’ve progressed through your work career for a period of time?
I did not expect to see print growing the way it is. People want displays, marketing tools, promotional items. It is good to see that the technology is progressing to fill the need.

Have you changed your plans or ideas about what area or type of job you might like to have since you first considered the graphic communications field and began studying for a career in it? What led to those changes?
My plans are still to open an environmentally safe, sustainable packaging business. I am working to grow my experience and knowledge in the industry but I see the potential and interest of what customers are looking for.

What do you see yourself doing a few years from now?
I see my self set up for success in a stable career and growing in my field. I hope to see myself in a management role and in the pursuit of growing my own business.

Was being a recipient of a PGSF (now The Foundation for Graphic Communication
Education) scholarship important for your journey, or did it have an impact on your future or ability to succeed in the industry?

The print scholarships I was able to receive made it possible for me to further my education. Without scholarships, going to college was not in my cards. The support and encouragement from this team changed the trajectory of my life.
