How did you first get interested in the graphic arts, or decide to focus on graphic communications in school?
I first became interested in graphic communications during my junior year of high school when I took a graphics course at my local community college. There, I was introduced to the world of print and design, which sparked my interest in the industry. That experience led me to pursue a degree in Graphic Communications at Ferris State University, where I continued to build my knowledge and passion for the field.
Did you take any courses in high school that were related to graphic communications, or that prepared you for your planned career?
I completed a two-semester Graphic Communications course through the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at West Shore Community College, where I gained hands-on experience in print production, design, and the graphic communications industry.
How do you think going through your education process prepared you for the workforce?
My education in graphic communications, both in high school and at Ferris State University, not only expanded my knowledge of the industry but also prepared me with a strong foundation in business and finance. Throughout my education, I completed two internships that gave me valuable hands-on experience in print production and allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom to real-world projects. Those experiences gave me a strong head start as I began my career in the printing industry.
What company are you working for now and what types of products and services do they provide to their customers?
Royle Printing is a web offset printer that specializes in the production of catalogs and magazines. We serve publishers, associations, universities, and corporate partners. Our wide assortment of press and bindery equipment in our facilities assures we can execute a variety of formats, treatments, and ancillary pieces without the need to outsource.
What job did you first have with the company when you started, what position do you have now, and/or what else have you done since joining the company?
I joined the company as a Sales and Marketing Intern between my junior and senior years of college. During my internship, I completed rotations through the marketing, sales, and production departments. After graduating, I transitioned into a full-time role as a Sales Representative, where I continue to build on that experience by helping customers find effective print solutions.
What do you think employers are looking for in today’s workforce and the current industry environment?
One of the most important qualities employers look for is a willingness to learn and take on new challenges. I believe you’ll never truly know which area of the industry you enjoy most unless you’re willing to try different roles and experiences.
Is there anything that you have found to be particularly different from what you initially expected, now that you’ve progressed through your work career for a period of time?
The print industry is much broader than most people realize. There is always something new to learn, making it impossible to know everything. Going into my career, I realized that continuous learning and adapting to new technologies, processes, and customer needs are essential for long-term success in the industry.
Have you changed your plans or ideas about what area or type of job you might like to have since you first considered the graphic communications field and began studying for a career in it? What led to those changes?
I have always had an interest in sales, but I never expected to find myself in the offset printing industry. Through my internships and full-time role, I had the opportunity to explore several different areas of the business, which confirmed that I enjoy working in sales. At the same time, those experiences taught me the value of keeping an open mind.
What do you see yourself doing a few years from now?
I see myself continuing to grow and advance in my current role. My goal is to build long-term relationships with customers and contribute to the continued success of my company.
Was being a recipient of a PGSF (now The Foundation for Graphic Communication
Education) scholarship important for your journey, or did it have an impact on your future or ability to succeed in the industry?
I am incredibly grateful to have been a recipient of a PGSF scholarship. The scholarship helped ease the financial burden of college, allowing me to focus more on my education and professional development. It provided me with the opportunity to further my education and pursue a career in the graphic communications industry, and I truly appreciate the investment PGSF made in my future.
