Grant Report GAIT at Forsyth Technical Community College

The FGCE Grant Impact: GAIT at Forsyth Technical Community College

A tremendous thank you to The Foundation for Graphic Communication Education (The FGCE) for awarding a grant to assist with funding for a new Graphtec FCX4000-50ES flatbed cutter for the Graphic Arts & Imaging Technology (GAIT) program, and the remaining balance was provided by Forsyth Technical Community College. After installation, we had in-person training on equipment setup, operation, and safety, allowing the cutter to be integrated into classroom instruction immediately. Remote training is also available to assist with questions and troubleshooting.

Initial training included vinyl test cuts using FTCC’s logos to ensure cutter precision and efficiency compared to manual cutting or in-line contour cutting. One student was eager to be the first to print a design for a custom cereal box. She printed art on vinyl adhesive using a wide-format printer, adhered it to 24pt board, and successfully completed an accurate prototype.
The FCX4000-50ES has expanded the program’s ability to produce professional-quality prototypes using materials such as paperboard, vinyl, foam, cardstock, along with a wide variety of materials that are compatible with this model. Students can move from concept and digital file prep to printing and finished prototypes using an industry-standard workflow with the help of this grant.

The cutter also provides hands-on experience with essential production concepts, the importance of proper file preparation, including registration, accurate bleed, nesting for minimal waste, cutting tolerances, and structural design for packaging. These projects strengthen technical skills and provide students with experience that closely reflects print and packaging production.

As this new equipment is incorporated into future assignments, students will be able to complete complex packaging and prototype projects that support workforce preparation. This equipment will excel instruction, improve the quality and accuracy of student work, and better align the program to meet the needs of regional print and packaging employers.
