Each month, WhatTheyTh!nk, in partnership with The Foundation for Graphic Communication Education (formerly the Print & Graphics Scholarship Foundation), profiles a promising student in a graphic communications or related program. The goal is to raise awareness of graphic communications programs, as well as help students like Anna Mitchell get a “leg up” on entering the industry after graduation.
This month, I talked to Anna Mitchell, a sophomore at Clemson University majoring in Packaging Science. Hailing from Fort Mill, S.C., she chose Clemson due largely to the school’s packaging program, as well as an FGCE scholarship. Said the FGCE’s Debbie Bohan in her nomination, “Anna has demonstrated passion and dedication to the industry since she was in high school. She continues to be a leader in her studies.”
When Anna was in high school, she was interested in both engineering and graphic design, and was hoping to land a career that could encompass both. “Eventually I found packaging,” she said—although it wasn’t love at first sight. “At first, I really did not like it,” she said. “I didn’t really like the manufacturing side of things, but I gave it another shot and did an internship where I got to make a candle package and I really loved it and I haven’t looked back since.”
